Student Leadership
At The Academy, Selsey, we believe that every student should have the opportunity to lead, influence and shape the life of the school. Our student leadership structure is designed to give pupils meaningful responsibility, develop confidence and character, and ensure that the student voice is at the heart of school improvement.
What Student Leadership Looks Like
Student leadership at The Academy is inclusive, ambitious and structured so that every pupil can take part. Our leadership opportunities include:
Senior Student Team
Our Senior Students, including our Head Students, lead the strategic direction of student voice across the school. They chair Student SLT meetings, act as ambassadors at events, support key areas such as wellbeing, eco-schools, extracurricular clubs and community projects, and work closely with staff on whole-school initiatives.
House Captains (Years 9–10)
House Captains lead charity work, inter-house competitions, and community engagement. They motivate younger students, contribute to assemblies and support whole-school events.
Tutor Captains (Years 7–8)
Each tutor group in Years 7 and 8 elects a Tutor Captain who represents their peers, shares feedback in meetings, and supports communication between the Student SLT and their tutor group.
Student Council Representatives
Our Student Council focuses on specific improvement projects such as the Eco Green Flag Award, wellbeing, anti-bullying, whole-school improvement, community initiatives and student voice.
Together, these roles ensure that every student in every tutor group is represented.
How the Student SLT Works
The Student Senior Leadership Team (Student SLT) brings together all student leadership groups each term. This ensures every tutor group is represented and every student’s voice can be heard.
Purpose of the Student SLT
- Strengthen student voice across the school
- Bring leaders together to share ideas and collaborate
- Discuss issues raised by students and propose solutions
- Lead improvement projects with staff
- Feed information back to tutor groups
- Promote our shared ethos of Pride in Excellence
What Happens in Meetings
Chaired by the Head Students, meetings include:
- Updates from each leadership group
- Planning charity, community and environmental projects
- Discussing school issues (e.g. canteen, homework, ICT, uniform)
- Reviewing areas such as assemblies, debates, careers and character curriculum
- Agreeing actions for leaders to take back to their tutor groups
