Academy Dance Team Shine at Regional Competition

We are incredibly proud of our senior dance team following an outstanding performance at Portsmouth Guildhall, where they competed in a highly challenging regional Dance Live event.

Facing strong competition from colleges and independent sector providers — many with significantly larger budgets — the standard across the evening was exceptionally high. Against this backdrop, the Academy achieved an impressive second place overall and was also awarded the Technical Award of the Night, recognising the precision, quality and professionalism of the performance.

This success continues a remarkable track record, with the team now placing in the top two at senior regional events for the past three consecutive years.

Excellence, Inclusion and Leadership

The programme is led by Chris Williams, an Early Career Teacher, whose impact has been exceptional. Around a quarter of the school has been involved in the project, and notably, the Academy was the only school on the night with multiple boys performing, reflecting the inclusive and inspiring nature of the provision.

The performance itself was a truly inclusive entry, with students representing a wide range of needs, including several pupils with Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs). Every student performed to an exceptionally high standard, embodying the Academy’s commitment to inclusion, opportunity and excellence.

Recognised Beyond the Academy

The performance also attracted praise from the wider audience. One parent, attending to support another school, shared the following feedback:

“I was genuinely moved and inspired by Selsey Academy’s incredible production. The Banksy concept was brilliantly executed, and the range of performers spoke volumes about the school’s commitment to inclusion and diversity. For me, Selsey Academy truly stood out as the highlight of the evening.”
Community Pride

It was also wonderful to see the Academy community out in force, with around a third of our staff body giving up their evening to support the team, alongside families and carers who cheered the dancers on throughout the night.

We are now hopeful that this result will secure progression to the National Finals, due to be held at the end of April in Portsmouth. We look forward to sharing further updates and celebrating what is already an exceptional achievement.
