Additional Frequently Asked Questions

Worried about unlocking phones and students getting to buses on time

Answer:
While we implement the new system, staff will be on hand with additional release devices to ensure students can unlock their pouches quickly while they get used to the process. We have also purchased more unlocking stations than recommended, so we hope delays will be minimal and students will be able to leave the site promptly for buses and transport.

If my child breaks the rules and, in line with policy, has to keep their phone secured until Friday, will this mean overnight?

Answer:
Yes. In line with the policy, sanctions must be sufficient to discourage students from breaking the rules. Phones may therefore remain secured until Friday if this sanction is applied.

I use tracking on my child’s phone and would prefer them not to turn it off at school

Answer:
In line with the policy, all students will be asked to turn their phones off during the school day. Some devices, even when set to silent, can still make sounds or display notifications through certain apps, which can disrupt learning.

If my child needs to update me after school about clubs or timings, how will they contact me?

Answer:
From 3:00pm, students will be able to unlock and access their phones, including those attending clubs or after-school activities. This will allow them to contact parents and make any necessary arrangements before travelling home.

Sometimes my child likes to share pictures of their artwork or take photos of Food Technology ingredients/whiteboards. Will this still be allowed?

Answer:
No. Department for Education guidance is very clear that phone use during the school day will not be permitted. However, staff will provide paper copies of ingredient lists or key information where needed. If students wish to share work or photographs with parents, staff will support this after 3:00pm where appropriate.

What if my child does not bring a phone to school?

Answer:
Parents should email ASAP directly at:Head@tas-tkat.org

Which year groups will this involve?

Answer:
All students in Years 7–10 will be expected to comply with the policy from 1st June. The policy will also apply to the new Year 7 intake, meaning all students from September onwards will be expected to comply.

The school uses apps such as Sparx and Arbor. Will students still need access to these during the school day?

Answer:
No. Both Sparx and Arbor are designed to support learning and organisation at home. Students will not need access to these apps during the school day. As always, students will continue to be issued with paper copies of school timetable and resources where needed.
